An empyema is a collection of pus that accumulates between the chest wall and the lung because the inner lining of the chest cavity is irritated, usually by some bacteria-laden substance. The lining, called the pleura, secretes or pours the fluid forth so that it forms a constricting pool around the lung. It there’s enough of it, the lobes of the lung are compressed and breathing is comprimised.
