Acidosis occurs when there is excess acid in the body, lowering the overall pH level of the human body.  The kidneys maintain the body’s normal pH level, unless a bicarbonate (a base) is lost.  Acidosis can be either respiratory or metabolic.  Diabetic ketoacidosis can result when ketones build up in the body due to uncontrolled diabetes.  This is life threatening if left untreated.  However, most types of acidosis respond well to treatment.
